TID, established in 1988, focuses on innovation and development within the Telefónica Group. It aims to enhance competitiveness and modernization through technological advancement and the implementation of new ideas. As one of Spain’s leading private R&D centers, it boasts significant activity and resources. TID leads European research projects, distinguishing itself as a key player in the continent. Overall, TID plays a vital role in driving innovation and advancing telecommunications.

Role

TID brings the telecom operator perspective to EXIGENCE. We have expertise in network management at large scale, practical know-how in data modeling and data infrastructures, skills in network capability exposure patterns and experience in industrial exploitation. An active contributor, TID also has a leadership position in SDOs and open-source communities.

Instituto de Telecomunicações (ITAV) is a private, not-for-profit organization, of public interest, a partnership of nine institutions with research and development in the field of Telecommunications. ITAV is actively involved in fundamental and applied research both at national and international levels. ITAV also plays its role towards public society with public awareness initiatives, knowledge transfer to industry, and by providing consulting services on a non-competing basis. ITAV members (about 200 PhD holding integrated researchers) are organized into research clusters and groups, which cover most of the R&D areas in Telecommunications and supporting sciences and technologies. ITAV hosts annually about 250 PhD students and about 200 MSc students. Advanced laboratory facilities are available in most Thematic Lines of ITAV to support applied research, which is carried out in the framework of national and international projects in cooperation with similar research institutions worldwide. Each year ITAV is involved in more than 170 projects, of which about 30-40 have European funding, obtained in a competitive basis.

Role

ITAV will support the Scientific Coordination of the project, along its tools and system architecture elaboration. ITAV will also leverage its unparalleled experimental trials capability and experience, to support key validation actions within the project. The ITAV team involved in EXIGENCE has a long track record of research and innovation. With telecommunications as its driver, the ITAV team will develop new insights towards increasing the flexibility and energy efficiency of the future telecommunications infrastructures, by proposing and validating designs and concepts that may present advantages to future iterations, and to be transferred as innovations. The team has made extensive novel contributions regarding resilient software-based telecommunication infrastructures, with a focus in virtualized systems and the use of NFV and slicing, both for intra-domain and inter-domain scenarios. It also has contributions, prototypes, and demonstrators to validate highly dynamic approaches for the application of mobile-based services handover selection mechanisms in telecommunications, which ITAV plans to further evolve in the scope of the EXIGENCE project. From a network control and operation perspective, ITAV is also interested in pursuing human centric technological designs for bootstrap, with the prospect of providing systems that are highly dynamic, while having low energy and overhead footprint, and where users have high control over their data and can enforce optimal economic and preferences capabilities.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) was founded in 1837 and is the oldest University in Greece. The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications (DIT) was founded in 1989 and is part of the School of Applied Sciences. The focus of the Software Centric & Autonomic Networking (SCAN) group of NKUA spans across a number of ICT domains, pursuing state-of-the-art solutions and cutting edge research in the areas of: Distributed Artificial Intelligence, AI-Enabled Green Communications, Context aware resource management, Digital Twins, IoT and Smart Cities, and Software Defined Networking.

Role

In the EXIGENCE project, NKUA will contribute to the definition of use case scenarios, system and standard requirements for future networks, energy-related metrics and the assessment of inter-domain dependencies, by providing its expertise and knowledge on network service slicing and management. NKUA will lead efforts to explore the needs of carbon-aware 6G network environments, while investigating and implementing AI/ML solutions for orchestration and automation of carbon-aware infrastructures.

TNO is an independent not-for-profit applied research organisation with a mission to connect people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way. The Networks department consists of over 60 people with expertise in the development and standardisation of new network technologies and protocols, and in designing, deploying and optimising networks, both wired and wireless.

Role

In EXIGENCE, TNO leads the definition of the requirements, scenarios and architecture of a future energy ecosystem, bringing its expertise from chairing the requirements group of 3GPP mobile broadband standard. TNO also leads the definition of metrics for end-to-end energy consumption and efficiency metering procedures and contributes to the research and development of methods for quantification of network function energy consumption and production. Another area of work is the analysis of the performance and energy usage trade-offs within and across resource domains and their impact on service quality. Furthermore, TNO contributes to the assessment and integration plans for the developed metering methods and continuous energy efficient optimization to ensure target levels are met and keeping transparency across the exposed interfaces. Lastly, TNO participates in the dissemination activities, including standardisation.

INTERNET INSTITUTE Ltd. (ININ) is a highly innovative SME, specialised in 5G, IoT and cloud solutions. Its main product is solution for mobile (4G, 5G) and fixed networks performance testing, benchmarking, and monitoring. Also, private 5G mobile systems with advanced features for industrial grade critical communications, and smart industrial IoT solutions are part of the portfolio. Role

The primary focus of INTERNET INSTITUTE within the EXIGENCE project is to develop and implement methods for energy consumption measurements and energy provision, as well as orchestrating services and resources with the goal of optimizing and reducing energy consumption. Development and integration activities will be based on the requirements, envisioned scenarios and functional architecture also designed by ININ’s participation which will be focused on practical feasibility of tools available today and in the near future. Finally, ININ will work on validation of the project’s outcomes, as well as on disseminating them. Knowledge and experiences gained through the EXIGENCE project are expected to help the company to further develop its existing products and to update its product roadmap.

ATOS is a next-gen technology leader in data-driven, trusted and sustainable digital transformation with a strong portfolio of patented technologies. With worldwide leading positions in advanced computing, security, AI, cloud and digital platforms, it provides deep expertise for all industries in more than 47 countries. Bringing together 53,000 world-class talents, ATOS expands the possibilities of data and technology across the digital continuum, now and for generations to come.

BDS R&D Spain is ATOS’ research and development division working towards innovation in BDS products through the results of the projects in which it participates. Committed to high quality in delivery, sustainability and cost control, our team (140 professionals in seven locations across Spain) is currently involved in 87 co-funded R&D projects.

Role

ATOS BDS R&D Spain is responsible for improving energy related metrics observability of cloud-native network functions (NFs), specifically within K8 environments targeting greener deployments. This involves mapping the energy consumption of hardware components to their corresponding containers/pods, incorporating energy production from local renewable sources, and extending this observability to span the entire service chain across multiple domains. This enables application workload management based on energy-efficient algorithms, facilitating K8 workload migrations to take advantage of available renewable resources, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint while maintaining desired performance. Furthermore, ATOS will explore methods for predicting resource consumption and production to proactively adapt power states for idle management or select model types based on available resources.
