Greening of streaming

Scope

Greening of Streaming is an organisation with international reach that was created to address growing concerns about the energy impact of the streaming sector. It provides a forum for the Global Internet Streaming industry to develop better engineering and to foster collaboration through the supply chain as we, Greening of Streaming, create a great experience for the consumer without wasting energy. Greening of Streaming is a members association that brings the industry together to help create joined-up thinking around end-to-end energy efficiency in the technical supply chain underpinning streaming services. Greening of Steaming is working to provide better real-world data to understand energy use relating to streaming, engineer better, and develop and share best practices through the industry community.
WG1 is working on Lexicon. To this date, the Power off, Sleep, standby, and Watts are specified.

Summary

WG1.Lexicon: Power off, Sleep and Standby

This document from WG1 focuses on the terms “Power off, Sleep and Standby’ – again, these are terms commonly used. They relate directly to energy consumption in our minds and so relate to sustainability, too. However, the use of these terms varies immensely through the supply chain. In this paper, Greening of Streaming talks about responses from a survey of engineers they carried out. They covered discussions about other groups and SDOs’ use of these terms and, at the end of the paper, explore harmonisation with some of these. WG1.Lexicon: WATTS

This document was created in response to a request from the Streaming Video Technology Alliance to help them develop their own ‘glossary of terms’ to include streaming-related issues.  Focussing on the term “WATTS” this short paper will open thinking into what is seemingly a mundane terms in common use, but when looked at in detail in different contexts – even in our own sector – the term has a wide range of interpretations. Relevance for EXIGENCE

The Greening of STreaming measurement framework is relevant for energy metrics and energy measurements. The open measurement platform build by Greening of Streaming is offered to EXIGENCE. Collaboration between EXIGENCE and Greening of Streaming is suggested in undertaking joint open measurement platforms. In addition, we can make our work from solutions assessment known to the Greening of Streaming members. The lexicon is relevant for requirements and scenarios.
