MISD — Modular Integrated Sustainable Datacenter

Scope

As the need for more sustainable computing and communication infrastructures grows, in the realm of climate change, the MISD project aims to address the increasing climate impact of digitalisation, enable energy flexibility, and the need for data sovereignty.

The aim of MISD is to develop a new modular, integrated, sustainable and secure-by-design concept to be deployed in places close to end users (edge computing) so that significant reduction in total energy consumption, from cooling to computing power and data flows, can be achieved. The MISD consortium will design, develop, and validate in a fieldlab innovative solutions, both in hardware and software, toward this target which will then be scaled up into a viable innovation ecosystem promoting sustainable digitalisation in Europe. The seven partners collaborate to design and develop a sustainable and secure-by-design edge datacenter in places close to end users.

Summary

Chantico is a Kubernetes operator focused on bringing energy intelligence to modern, cloud-native data centers. Built as part of the Modular Integrated Sustainable Datacenters (MISD) project, Chantico provides a fully declarative way to discover, configure, and monitor physical energy measurement devices.

By mapping power consumption across a graph of services and workloads, Chantico enables accurate attribution of energy usage to customer-provided services, simplifying administration and reducing dashboard clutter.

Our mission is to make sustainable cloud operations effortless.

The Goals:

  • Become aware of and configure physical measurement devices.
  • Monitor power consumption across PDUs, servers and cluster workloads.
  • Attribute energy usage to customers and tenants
  • Integrate with other workload orchestrators and domain-aware controllers.

In the end, we support sustainable operations via workload migration to green energy sources.

Relevance for EXIGENCE

For end2end energy measurement and reduction tooling is necessary, MISD has the same goals, with a slightly shifted focus. For instance MISD  offers an open source solution for measuring and orchestration of energy on bare bones, virtuals and containers; Chantico
