The Future is Green: EXIGENCE Project Wins Big at the one6G Summit 2025

The EXIGENCE project is thrilled to announce we’ve won an award at the one6G Summit 2025 in Bologna, Italy! Our demo, “Per-service energy consumption control in sustainable 6G,” was recognised for its pioneering approach to tackling a critical challenge in the digital world.

The one6G Summit 2025 wrapped up in Bologna with an inspiring finale: the announcement of the Best Demo Awards! Held from September 18-19, the summit brought together global experts, researchers, and innovators to share insights and explore the future of 6G. Among the highlights was a cutting-edge demo exhibition, where 13 pioneering demos were pitched on stage and explored in depth. We are incredibly proud to have been among the award winners. Step Towards a Smarter and More Sustainable Future

This award is a huge win for the EXIGENCE vision of enabling service-level sustainability measurements across different domains. Our project addresses the often-overlooked environmental costs of remote services, which can be hidden by local efficiency gains. Our key idea is the “per-service” approach, which provides awareness of the end-to-end energy consumption of a specific service, like video streaming or data transfer.

By making this information available to both service operators and end users, we empower them to make smarter choices and reduce energy waste. For instance, a user might not notice a big difference between 4K and HD video resolution, but the energy consumption can vary drastically. Our approach provides the insight needed to make informed, energy-efficient choices.

Demo 8 – Per-service energy consumption control in sustainable 6G

While our current demo is focused on the 3GPP domain, it lays the groundwork for extending energy measurements to cross-domain environments. To achieve this, we’ve highlighted two crucial components: robust energy measurement methods and a dedicated energy observability layer. The former tracks the energy used by each service component, while the latter aggregates and makes this data accessible to all relevant stakeholders.

A special note of thanks goes out to our incredible team. The demo, which physically runs at the INTERNET INSTITUTE testbed in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was presented by our representative Rudolf, with crucial support from Osama Abboud, Artur Hecker, Zoran Despotovic, and Luka Koršič. This win is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire EXIGENCE consortium, a true example of teamwork between the INTERNET INSTITUTE Ltd and Huawei.

This award is not just a win for the EXIGENCE project; it’s a small but significant step towards a smarter, more sustainable digital future. We are thrilled to see our collective efforts acknowledged and recognised, and we are more motivated than ever to continue shaping a greener world.
